A major transformation is underway at Sheffield Forgemasters as part of a government-backed investment programme aimed at boosting Britain’s industrial and defence capabilities.

At the centre of the redevelopment is a £210 million machine shop, a vast 30,000 m² facility set to become one of Europe’s most advanced heavy machining centres. The site will house up to 24 large-scale machines, including some of the biggest vertical turning lathes in operation.
Thousands of Tension Control Bolts will be integrated into the structure upon completion, spanning a wide range of diameters. A sincere thank you to BHC, the team responsible for the on-site steel erection, for welcoming TCB and providing a site tour – offering a valuable opportunity to see the project’s progress first hand.

Alongside this, work is progressing on a new 13,000-tonne forging line, which is set to deliver the UK’s largest open-die forging capacity once complete. With Billington Structures and VINCI the partners responsible for delivering this phase of the project, the team was provided with a CPD session on high strength tension control bolting. This offered valuable insight into installation best practices, quality assurance, design details, and the importance of corrosion protection – key factors in ensuring the integrity and performance of the steelwork.
The upgrades form part of a wider £1.3 billion recapitalisation programme, designed to modernise the company’s infrastructure and support the production of critical components for the defence and nuclear sectors, including submarine and reactor parts.

Once finished, the redevelopment will position the Sheffield site as a next-generation manufacturing hub, combining advanced machinery with modern production technologies to strengthen the UK’s strategic industrial base.
